Final Expense

No one should have to crowdfund a funeral.

The average American funeral now costs over $9,000 — and the first bill arrives before the funeral does. Most families pay it on a credit card.

What a death actually costs in the first 90 days.

Most families have no idea what's coming. The funeral home does — they handle this every day. By the time the bills arrive, the surviving spouse has 48 hours to make decisions they've never had to make before, while still in shock.

First 48 Hours

The embalming and transport bill.

Embalming alone runs $800–$1,500. Transportation of the body, basic services, and the casket selection meeting all happen in the first two days. The funeral home expects a deposit before they begin — typically $2,000–$4,000 — and they expect it now.

First 2 Weeks

The funeral itself.

A traditional service with burial averages $9,000–$12,000. Even a "simple" cremation with a service is $3,500–$6,000. The casket is the single biggest line item — and the one most families overpay on, because they're being shown options the day after the worst day of their life.

First 90 Days

The bills nobody warns you about.

Headstone: $1,000–$5,000. Final medical bills the insurance didn't cover. Probate filing fees. Outstanding credit card balances the estate is responsible for. Cemetery plot maintenance fees. The total often runs another $5,000–$15,000 on top of the funeral itself.

Most families pay for this with credit cards, GoFundMe pages, and savings they were going to use for retirement. A final expense policy is what stops a death from becoming a second financial disaster — the one the family is still paying for three years later.

Can I take a final expense policy out on someone else?

Yes — and most of our clients do exactly that.

You take out the policy on a parent or aging relative. You pay the monthly premium — typically $30 to $60 a month depending on age, health, and the coverage amount you choose. When they pass, the insurance company pays the death benefit directly to you, usually within days. Most policies pay out at least $10,000, with some going up to $25,000 depending on the policy you select. You use that money however your family needs it: funeral costs, outstanding bills, travel for relatives, anything else. Once it's paid to you, it's your money — nothing locks you into spending it only on the funeral.

The person being insured does need to sign the application and answer the health questions — you can't take out a policy on someone without their knowledge. But that conversation is usually easier than people expect. Most parents would rather have it now than leave their kids scrambling later.

How final expense actually works.

01

What it covers.

A small whole life policy that pays your family $5,000 to $25,000 directly when you pass — typically within days of the claim, not weeks. They use it for the funeral, the medical bills, the mortgage payment that month, or anything else they need. Despite the name, there's no requirement to spend it on a funeral.

02

Who qualifies.

Almost everyone. Most policies have no medical exam, just a health questionnaire. If you're between 50 and 85 and reasonably healthy, you may qualify for immediate coverage. If your health is more complicated, you may start in a "graded benefit" period for the first 2–3 years — we'll tell you that upfront, not after you've signed.

03

What it costs.

Some agencies advertise teaser rates — "starting at $9.99/month!" — then quote you 5x that once they have your information. We don't do that. We give you real numbers based on your actual age, health, and coverage needs. For most people, premiums run $30 to $60 per month for typical coverage amounts. We shop multiple carriers because the same health profile gets priced very differently — and we'll tell you honestly if another option fits you better, even if it means buying elsewhere.

Built by people who'd rather have the difficult conversation.

No one wants to think about funerals. The families who never do are the ones who end up at GoFundMe, asking strangers to cover what insurance would have handled. The kindest thing you can do for the people you'll leave behind is have this conversation now — while you can choose calmly, while the math is simple, while you have options. We don't sell pressure. We have honest conversations about what fits your situation, what doesn't, and why. The hardest part is making the time. The rest is just questions and answers.
